Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between DR and CT in industrial X-ray inspection? +
DR (Digital Radiography) produces a single 2D radiograph for each exposure — fast, lower cost per inspection, ideal for production-line porosity / crack / inclusion detection on castings, welds and tires. CT (Computed Tomography) acquires hundreds of DR projections around the part and reconstructs a full 3D voxel model — revealing internal defects in three dimensions, enabling wall-thickness mapping, CAD comparison and metrology. The FUNCT family delivers both DR and CT on the same machine; the FUNC, FUNS, FUNL, FUNZ, FUNT and FUNH families are DR-only and built for higher inspection throughput.
Which platform matches my part envelope and throughput? +
For laboratory and small-casting work — FUNS small cabinets or the FUNCT2100 desktop CT (≤30 kg parts). For general production castings up to Ø600 × 800 mm and 100 kg — FUNC160 / 225 / 320 / 450, choosing kV based on the densest through-thickness X-ray path. For wheel hubs specifically — FUNL160B with built-in ADR. For tires — FUNL120C with the U-shaped linear-array detector. For one-piece die-cast bodies and subframes from giga-press lines (up to 11 × 8 × 3 m envelope) — FUNT. For pipeline / pressure-vessel weld joints up to 12.5 m length / 10 T load — FUNH. Our engineering team scopes the platform to your part, defect-acceptance criteria and inspection cadence.
How does Automatic Defect Recognition (ADR) work and which models include it? +
ADR is an AI-based image analysis module trained to detect and classify casting defects — pores, cracks, shrinkage cavities, slag inclusions, porosity — without operator interpretation. It runs in real time on the inspection image and either passes or rejects each part based on the customer's defect-acceptance specification. ADR is standard on FUNL160B (wheel hub), FUNL120C (tire) and FUNT (mega-casting), and is an option on the FUNCT CT family and the FUNH weld inspection cell. It is configurable per part type; the customer's golden-sample library is used to train the model during commissioning.
What kV rating do I need for my material and thickness? +
As a rough guide: 160 kV handles aluminium up to ~110 mm or steel up to ~20 mm; 225 kV handles aluminium up to ~150 mm or steel up to ~25 mm; 320 kV handles steel up to ~45 mm; 450 kV handles steel up to ~70 mm and is required for large iron castings and mega-cast aluminium bodies with deep sections. The CT systems use the same kV ladder. We size kV from the densest section the X-ray must penetrate, with a safety margin for image contrast quality at the defect-size threshold.
Why is the Stallion CT & X-Ray platform superior to competitor offerings? +
The platform spans the complete inspection matrix on unified component standards — amorphous silicon flat-panel detectors, split-tube X-ray sources, multi-layer lead shielding to ≤1 μSv/h, ADR modules trained on customer part libraries, and a common Windows-based control software with ASTM E155 / E446 / E505 reference image libraries built in. The FUNCT family delivers genuine DR + CT dual imaging on one machine — not as separate boxes. For high-volume production, ADR cells (FUNL, FUNT) integrate directly with the casting line for 100% CNC inspection without operator interpretation. All systems run continuous duty with international safety certification and field-proven service across automotive, wheel, tire, aerospace and EV-battery production.
